Our Family

Franchetto Family Soave Wine White Verona

In the last strip of land, in the east of Soave area, are located farm's vineyards Franchetto. In Terrossa, where the family has lived for over a century, you can still feel an ancient peasant culture, tied to a tradition of frontier between the provinces of Verona and Vicenza.

Agriculture is very related to the influence of the mountaineer Lessinian that in these clayey soils founded their first zones.

Pastoralism was the first activity that was soon transformed thanks to the great passion of his uncle Toni.
He was a lover of vine grapes, so he planted the first lab plant nursery where he experienced the various types of cuttings known in those days, the old from Gold, Uliega, Delight and many others.

Then he switched from grapes to eat grapes to make wine. Since 1936, with the intervention of Sante Franchetto the company has changed permanently for viticulture.
Until 1982, the company is a producer of grapes. Then begins the winemaking that completes the path begun by Uncle Toni. Today Antonio Franchetto continues the long history gained from that idea while remaining related to historic vines grapes and typical of these lands: Garganega and Durella.

Environment

soave durello vino verona

Our vineyards are located in two different areas, both typical for the production of wine. Tradition and territory have always been very important to us, that’s why we cultivate indigenous grape varieties such as Garganega and Durella, that on these soils give their best.

Terrossa

It’s not mere chance if the town is called "Terrossa". In fact, since Roman times, it was called “terra rubea”, which means “red soil”. Not only the color of the ground characterizes these places, another important factor is the richness of the soil: the ground is very rich in minerals and of debris coming down from the rock columns and from the underbrush. Minerals and debris are a valuable natural fertilizer, tehry’re abundant and always replenished, which has always given settlers plenty of harvests, precious tubers and refined grapes.

Our Garganega, with an average age of 50 – 60 years, grows on a little hill that here in Terrossa we call “Capelina”, due to the church that you can see on it.

The vineyards are located at 250 m.a.s.l. on a very steep slope; this contributes in a very decisive way to the flow of water and prevents stagnation and excessive irrigation problems. The nature of the soil is very diversified and presents numerous stratifications with a clayey, sandy structure and, sometimes, a visible skeletal structure with high content of calcium, magnesium and potassium, mixed with basaltic rocks, due to the presence of numerous submarine volcanoes dating back to 50-60 million years ago. This ex volcanos are still noticeable in the cone-shaped hills that embellish the landscape.

Vestenanova

Durello Vino suolo territorio

Our Durella grape variety is cultivated in Vestenanova, on high Val d’Alpone. The vineyards are located at between 550 and 600 m.a.s.l. Here you can enjoy a typical mountain landscape with grazing and vast green fields. 25 years ago, when Antonio and Mara decided to plant their first vineyard here, they found a big challenge in front of them: in fact the terroir is completely different from the one they were used to. After the first years of “setting-in period” the results started to arrive and their desire of planting new vineyards in this amazing landscape was growing day by day. Today in Vestenanova we cultivate five hectars of vineyards, and we’re proud of having discovered this particular territory, which is very good for the production of grapes.

Sustainability

"I think having land and not ruining it is the most beautiful art that anybody could ever want."
Andy Wahrol

We have always cultivated the environment around us with love and respect, conscious that a healthy ecosystem is the base to obtain wines that can give emotions to the people that taste them. That’s the reason why we decided to follow some techniques that allow us to reduce to the minimum the impact of our work on the soil, in order to let our vineyards in good condition for us and for the next generations of winemakers.

Magis

ecologia Franchetto Vino soave Durello
We adhere to the national Magis project since its very beginning. Magis project’s goal is to reduce the treatments in the vineyards in order to obtain a new generations of wines without harmful remainings for human health. Following this technique we limit the entries of the tractors in the vineyard, reducing CO2 emissions on the atmosphere. Thanks to these little carings we work in a clean environment e we’re able to offer to the final client – and to us of course – a healthy and genuine wine.
Magis is a Latin word that means "more", "always better". Magis is precision farming, which means doing only what is needed, just where and when needed, by recording and checking everything, till the certification you'll find on the label. Further info: click here.

Photovoltaic system

ecologia Franchetto Vino soave Durello

We are energetically independent, thanks to a photovoltaic system that covers all the energetic needs of the company.

The photovoltaic plant, installed on the roof of the winery, produces 45.000 kWh per year and, beyond the economic saving for the company, it contributes to the protection of the environment because it reduces the usage of fossil fuel and the emissions of CO2 in the atmosphere.
